Over the years, there have been a long line of myths about sexual harassment that have appeared. Chances are that you have heard most of them and are not aware that most are simply incorrect. Here are 4 sexual harassment myths debunked:

Myth: Only A Woman Can Be Sexually Harassed

Truth: Wrong. A man can also be the victim of sexual harassment, even though this is rarer than a man harassing a woman. No matter what gender you are, sexual harassment can still occur.

Myth: A Woman Cannot Be Sexually Harassed By Another Woman or A Man Cannot Be Sexually Harassed By Another Man

Truth: Wrong. The U.S. Supreme Court has already recognized that illegal sexual harassment can happen between two people, no matter if they are the same gender or not. A man can be sexually harassed by a man and a woman can be sexually harassed by a woman.

Myth: Sexual Harassment Only Happens At Work

Truth: Wrong. Sexual harassment can happen anywhere. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that professors, teachers, and others in authority positions in a school system are also prohibited from sexually harassing students. However, this type of case was decided under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, not under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. No matter which act it falls under, sexual harassment is still illegal.

Myth: Only People In Positions Of Authority Can Harass Their Workers

Truth: Wrong. Sexual harassment can occur between a supervisor and their workers, but it can also occur between co-workers and even vendors or agents of the employer. It is not a matter of their position with the company, but more a matter of if the employer knew, or should have known, about the harassment and then failed to take action.
