What Date Will I Receive My Monthly SSDI and SSI Benefits?

Posted by: Chris

Many people are forced to wait months to find out if they are approved for Social Security disability benefits. After such a long wait, the people who are approved are eager to finally start receiving their benefits. But, many people aren’t sure what day of the month they should expect to receive their benefits.

When will your check arrive? The answer to this question depends on whether you are approved for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.  Here’s when you should expect your check every month:

When Will You Receive SSI Benefits?

SSI benefits are paid on the first of the month. However, the first of the month sometimes falls on a weekend or federal holiday. In this event, you will receive benefits on the first banking day before the weekend or holiday.

For instance, if the first of the month falls on a Sunday, you should receive benefits on Friday instead. If Friday is a holiday, you will receive benefits on Thursday.

When Will You Receive SSDI Benefits?

The rules are different for SSDI benefits. If you were approved prior to 1997, you will receive your monthly benefits on the third of every month. But, the same rules apply when it comes to weekends and federal holidays. If the third of the month falls on one of these days, you will receive your check the day before instead.

A different set of rules apply to those who were approved for benefits after 1997. The SSA uses birthdates to determine when payments are made to these individuals every month.

If your birthday falls between the 1stand 10thof the month, you should expect your check to arrive on the second Wednesday of each month. For example, if your birthday is February 4th, you should receive a check on the second Wednesday of every month.

People who were born between the 11thand 20thof the month should receive their benefits on the third Wednesday of the month. Finally, the people who were born between the 21stand 31stwill receive benefits on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

The rules are complicated. Instead of trying to remember each of these rules, mark the date you should receive your benefits every month on a calendar. This will make it easier for you to keep track of when your benefits should arrive.
